Monte Cristo Sandwich
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 1/3 cups water
- 1 egg
- 1 ounce sliced white meat of turkey
- 1 ounce sliced Swiss cheese
- 1 ounce sliced ham
- 2 slices egg bread
- Canola oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for sprinkling
- Raspberry jelly for dipping
Begin with sifting the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a bowl. In another bowl, beat the egg before adding water to it. Gradually mix this liquid mixture into the dry ingredients until well combined. Set the batter aside.
Lay out the slices of egg bread. On one slice, arrange the slices of turkey first, followed by the Swiss cheese, and finally the ham. Top with the second slice of bread to form your sandwich. Cut the assembled sandwich into quarters, securing each section with a toothpick to hold it together.
Heat the canola oil in a frying pan to 360°F. Dip each quarter of the sandwich into the prepared batter, ensuring it’s well-coated. Carefully place the battered sandwich quarters into the hot oil, frying them until they turn golden brown and crispy.
Once fried to perfection, remove the sandwiches from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Remove the toothpicks, and sprinkle a generous amount of powdered sugar over the top. Serve your Monte Cristo Sandwich with a side of raspberry jelly as a delightful dipping sauce, and enjoy the heavenly mixture of sweet and savory flavors in every bite.
