The secret to its success lies in the perfectly cooked beef patties, paired with the sweetness of caramelized onions, and the rich melt of Swiss cheese, all sandwiched between two crispy slices of rye bread. This is comfort food at its finest, offering a delightful play on textures and flavors with every bite.

  • 1 whole large onion, halved and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
  • 5 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter, for grilling

In a medium skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become golden brown and soft. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.

In a separate skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Cook the patties on both sides until they are fully cooked through.

Lay out 4 slices of rye bread and top each with a slice of Swiss cheese. Add a beef patty to each slice, followed by a quarter of the caramelized onions. Top the onions with another slice of cheese and close the sandwiches with the remaining bread slices. In a clean griddle or skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Grill the sandwiches until they are golden brown, then add the remaining butter to the skillet. Flip the sandwiches and cook on the other side until they are crisp, golden brown, and the cheese has melted.

Serve your delicious patty melts hot off the grill, paired with a side of crispy French fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal. The golden crispy exterior paired with the melted cheese and flavorful beef patty guarantees a bite of heaven with every chew.
